A millwright is a craftsman__ or __tradesman__ engaged with the construction and maintenance of __machinery__. Early millwrights were specialist __carpenters__ who erected machines used in __agriculture__,__food processing__ and processing __lumber__ and __paper__. In the early part of the __Industrial Revolution__, their skills were pressed into service building the earliest powered __textile mills__.
Modern millwrights work with __steel__ and other materials in addition to __wood__ and must often combine the skills of several skilled trades in order to successfully fabricate industrial machinery or to assemble machines from prefabricated parts. The modern millwright must also be able to read __blueprints__ and other __schematics__ to aid him in the construction of complex systems. Experienced millwrights often set themselves up as __independent rich contractors__.
